Developed after the war by the New Federation, the Gundam Double X is based on the design of the original GX-9900 Gundam X. It features a similar look and many of the same weapon systems as the original Gundam X,GX-9901-DX Gundam Double Xbut it also incorporates new and/or improved weapons that weren't found on the GX.

The main weapon of the Gundam Double X is the devastatingly powerful Satellite Cannon. This time, it's double the fun with a Twin cannon that fires two blasts, one through a cannon on either shoulder of the Double X. The Double X also features the ability to fire the Satellite Cannon in succession, something its predecessor could not. One shot from the Satellite Cannon fends off an entire New Federation army after Garoad first steals the Double X, and later, two shots free Tifa Adil from the Space Revolutionary Army before the third shot destroys the Colony Laser.

However, like the GX, the Double X is not simply about wiping out millions of people at a time and raining down destruction anywhere it goes, however fun that may be. It features many conventional weapons for conventional combat, when you just have to take out an army, not a country, or for those times where the moon just won't rise. The buster rifle and beam sword both see a lot of action in normal battles, and the head Vulcans save Garoad's life when Shagia and Olba Frost send out an odd man in a white mobile suit to defeat the Double X and kill Garoad Ran.

The Double X sees Garoad through a lot leading up to the final battle with the Frost brothers' own version of the Satellite Cannon. In near lunar orbit, Shagia and Olba Frost prepare to take revenge on the world that forgot them as the Double X suddenly appears in their sights. Sensing the GX-9900, the Microwave system resets and aims at the Double X instead of the Virsago and Ashtaron. Though they aren't completely charged, Shagia and Olba Frost fire the Satellite Cannon at the Double X, which in turn fires back at them, fully charged. The ensuing explosion kills the Frosts, destroys the microwave system, and severely damages the Double X. Rather than try to salvage the Gundam, Jamil and company choose to leave the Double X floating in space near the moon which once housed its deadliest weapon.
