Fifteen years ago, the Earth Federation unveiled a secret weapon during the 7th Space War: The Gundam mobile suit series. Each Gundam was piloted by a Newtype who in turn controlled several bit mobile suits via theGW-9800 Airmaster Flash System. The most powerful and devastating of these Gundams was the GX-9900, known for its incredible Satellite System with the power to wipe out entire colonies. However, another Gundam employed by the Federation was the GW-9800 Airmaster.

Much more mobile than its GX-9900 and GT-9600 cousins, the Airmaster sports a feature known as the "trans system" in which it changes form from a mobile suit into an airplane (Gundam W fans, think Bird Mode or Neo-Bird Mode on the Wing Gundam and Wing Gundam Zero). However, this mobility came at the sacrifice of strength. As one can clearly see, the Airmaster isn't exactly a walking hydrogen bomb like the GX or the Leopard. It comes with speed, not firepower. However, for both the Newtype controlling bit suits during the War, and now in AW 0015 for Witts Sue, the trade-off is apparently acceptable.

The Airmaster's main weapon is its two buster rifles, which it commonly makes good use of in its flight mode. They're not particularly strong, but they get the job done for Witts, often coming to the aid of a comrade in need. Its two pairs of Vulcans are also not without their usefulness, though they usually are secondary to the rifles. Then again, with such a light arsenal, I suppose just about anything that can fire a bullet would be "not without its usefulness," eh?

The Airmaster's first appearance in the series is when Roby Loy and Witts Sue are sent out in their Gundams to recover Tifa Adil after she had been rescued/kidnapped by Garoad Ran. Little did anyone (including himself) know Garoad wasn't lying when he claimed the GX has a powerful secret weapon...

The Airmaster remains a powerful opponent for enemies of the Freeden until its defeat by the New Federation's new models force the need for an upgrade that comes in the form of the Airmaster Burst.
